Sustainability at the Water-Energy Nexus
The University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and the Environment (SNRE) is seeking a tenured faculty member to contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching which addresses sustainability at the energy-water nexus. Energy and water are the most critical resource challenges facing both developed and developing countries. Energy systems face declining availability of fossil fuels, problematic carbon emissions, and burgeoning demand. At the same time water supply, demand and quality already pose urgent problems at global, regional and local levels; especially when considering the uncertain impacts of climate change upon existing hydrologic resources. Solutions to this complex set of challenges must recognize the highly interdependent nature of water resources and energy production systems. A sustainable future will require the integration of ecologically sensitive water management with the realities of energy demand and available energy production technologies.
SNRE's overarching objective is to help bridge fields of study within SNRE, including Aquatic Sciences and Sustainable Systems, as well as to interact with other academic units across the University. In particular, we expect that the chosen candidate will play an active role in the new Engineering Sustainable Systems Dual Master’s Degree Program between the College of Engineering and the School of Natural Resources and Environment. Responsibilities include the development and delivery of courses related to energy and water issues, and relevant to the Sustainable Systems field of study and related dual masters’ degree programs with the College of Engineering (MS NRE/MSE) and the Ross School of Business (MS NRE/MBA). While teaching responsibilities are primarily at the Masters level, undergraduate and/or doctoral teaching is encouraged. Courses will be determined in consultation with the Dean, and the Sustainable Systems and Aquatic Sciences faculty. In addition, responsibilities include supervision of thesis and dissertation work as well as student advising.
